 Art’s Story

The serial entrepreneur.   Art is well known for starting Encompass Services, the rollup company he co-founded.  In its first year the firm hit $1 billion in sales, a listing on the NYSE, and the Fortune 500.  In  4 years Art and his team acquired over 220 companies, 36,000 employees, and 10,000 service trucks.  With sales of $5 billion, it was the largest mechanical service company in the US.   After 4 years Art decided to pursue investing in other business opportunities.

His first healthcare venture changed the face of emergency medicine and led to an explosion of freestanding ERs in the US.  As founder and CEO of Emergency Health Centers Art tackled the deadly problem of long wait times in hospital ERs.  He designed and opened the first independent emergency centers in the nation.  Today average ER wait times have dropped from over 24 hours to under 4 hours, saving countless lives and endless suffering.

He says, ‘In my ERs, I had a front-row seat to the train wreck of systemic failures baked into ‘fee for service’ healthcare, and the hyperinflation in a healthcare system that is controlled by insurance.   He witnessed the devastating impact of profit driven insurance companies that puts profits before patients.  Denying coverage and forcing unpaid ER bills on families who believed they had protection.

In the ER Art realized that putting the ‘customer’ back in the driver seat was the secret to fixing the broken US healthcare system.   So he started First Primary Care, one of the first membership-based Direct Primary Care practices in the nation.   Where members pay a monthly fee and get unlimited primary care from a dedicated doctor and care team.  This new delivery model fit better with healthy lifestyles and modern communications technology.  Turning everyday patients into engaged consumers of care, with doctors motivated by healthy members instead of maximizing fees for healthcare services.

In researching alternatives to traditional health insurance, Art learned how Medical Cost Sharing was replacing health insurance for many in the Christian community.  Then  he connected with the founder of Sedera Health who was thinking the same way.   He partnered with Sedera to pursue a shared vision to fix employer based health benefits by combining membership based primary care with non-faith based membership based medical cost sharing.

The sharing economy has disrupted industries and improved our world in incredible ways.  Scoop Health aims to disrupt health Insurance by putting healthy customers in charge of their own care and lowering costs by eliminating insurance profits and overhead.
